The Basics of Effective Bible Study
The 7 “Cs”
of effective Bible study
Christ-centered
-
The Bible is the revelation of God and His glory.
It centers around the salvation He provides through His Son, Jesus Christ.
All truth is centered around Him.
Concentrate
-
Find a quiet time and place for your Bible studies. Minor distractions compromise the pursuit of God and His Truth.
Carefulness
-
Don’t be “sloppy” in your studies.
Use sound reference works and study helps.
Don’t “lean on your own understanding” (Proverbs 3:5), or trust in your own heart (“feelings” - Proverbs 28:26).
Don
’t read your own personal interpretations into God’s Word.
Let the Bible speak for itself.
Context
-
Always consider the context in which the passage you are studying is placed, historically, culturally, dispensationally, and prophetically.
Comparison
-
Compare passages dealing with the same subject.
For instance, many of Christ’s parables are given in more than one of the gospels.
Each rendering provides additional truth and perspective.
Taken together, the full richness of His teachings become more apparent.
Contrast
-
Sometimes it may appear that things have “changed.”
Carefully consider why this may or may not be the case.
Additionally, sometimes looking at the “opposite” makes the truth of the subject more apparent, eg., sin and its consequences vs righteousness and its promises, light vs darkness, feast vs famine, etc..
Conclusion
-
Bible study has a purpose: to instruct of God and His ways, and to provoke us to obey God.
Seek God’s purpose for you in what He has drawn you to.
What does it mean for YOU?
How should YOU respond. Unapplied truth is "worthless."
